How To Prevent and Treat Hair Split Ends

Split ends is a common problem that stops many of us from reaching our hair goals of healthy, shiny, soft and luscious hair.

In layman's terms split ends occur when one hair strand becomes damaged and literally splits or divides into more than one bit. This often happens at the ends of our hair but can also happen anywhere along the length of the hair.

Split ends can be caused by a number of factors including friction, dryness, heat damage and chemical damage.

Luckily there are a number of simple steps that can be taken to prevent, and if necessary treat, split ends.

How To Prevent and Treat Split Ends

1. Dry Your Hair Gently
Don't vigorously rub your hair with a towel to dry it. Be gentle! Squeeze the excess water out of your hair gently with your hands. Ideally allow your hair to air dry after washing it.

If you use a towel to help dry your hair, wrap it lightly around your hair and gently squeeze it to draw the excess water out.

2. Use a Wide Tooth Comb On Wet Hair
Hair is more fragile when wet. Don't brush wet hair, use a wide tooth comb instead.

I keep a wide tooth comb in my shower recess and use it while I still have conditioner in my hair. This helps remove any tangles from my hair whilst minimising the amount of hair breakage and damage.

Use a wide tooth comb with conditioner in the shower

3. Comb & Brush Your Hair Gently
Start from the ends of your hair and work your way up. Gently de-tangle any knots with your fingers.

4. Minimise Your Brushing/Combing
Do not over brush your hair. Once your brush/comb glides through your hair with no obstructions, stop. You don't need to brush or comb any more.

5. Avoid Rough Styling
Don't regularly tease/back comb your hair as this can cause breakage.

6. Use a Good Quality Shampoo & Conditioner
Dehydrated hair is more prone to breakage and damage. It is important to use a good quality shampoo and conditioner that will nourish and ideally strengthen your hair without applying any chemical nasties to it.

My holy grail shampoo and conditioner is bhave Rescue Intense Repair Shampoo and bhave Rescue Intense Repair Conditioner. These products nourish, strengthen and repair hair. They are infused with Replicine Functional Keratin and Argan Oil to reduce hair breakage. Like all bhave products they are free from any chemical nasties including parabens and sulphates, as well as sodium chloride.

7. Apply a Deep Conditioning Treatment Or Hair Mask
I am currently using the bhave Deep Intense Conditioning Masque at least once a fortnight to provide intense moisture to my hair to help keep it healthy, moisturised and damage free. This product is particularly good for those of us with coloured, heat stressed or damaged hair.

Another great product to use is the bhave Leave-In Creme which contains macadamia nut, jojoba and certified organic argan oil. It provides hair with an extra conditioning boost and protection, and thus makes it less susceptible to breakage.

8. Protect Your Hair From Heat
Heat weakens your hair shaft thus making it prone to breakage. Styling your hair using heat tools, such as straighteners, curling wands and curling irons are common causes of hair damage and split ends. Try to avoid or at least minimise these methods of hair styling.

If you are unwilling to give up these hair styling methods then make sure you use a heat protectant on your hair such as GHD Heat Protect Spray. My favourite heat protectant which I've using for over three years is KMS Free Shape Hot Flex Spray.

KMS Free Shape Hot Flex Spray

Another method I've used to minimise the amount of time I use my hair straightener is to undergo the bhave Smoothe Treatment. I've previously blogged about this treatment here. The bhave Smoothe Treatment lasts for up to 4 months and  has dramatically decreased the amount of time I spend straightening my hair and thus the amount of time I'm exposing my hair to damaging heat.

If you are buying a new heat styling tool always try to choose one which allows for a wide range of temperature control such as the Cloud Nine The Original Iron - Hair Straightener which allows the temperature to be varied between 100 to 200 degrees Celsius. This allows you to keep the heat setting as low as possible whilst still effectively straightening your hair. Now the bargain hunter in me needs to share with you that I noticed this straightener is currently reduced at Ry from $315 to $264. Click on the above link to shop at Ry if you are interested in this special.

9. Minimise The Use of Your Hair Dryer
Ideally allow your hair to air dry. If you must use your hair dryer to speed up the drying process, use it on the low setting, preferably set to cool. To further minimise damage to your hair don't hold your hairdryer too close to your hair.

10. Use Hair Friendly Accessories
Tight elastics with metal bits can damage your hair especially if left in your hair for long periods or overnight. Ribbons are gentler on your hair.

11. Trim Your Hair Regularly
Trimming your hair eliminates split ends by cutting them off. Having regular hair trims every 6-8 weeks is recommended to minimise the amount of hair your hairdresser needs to trim off your hair's length to eliminate any split ends. The longer the duration between hair trims, the bigger your split ends will potentially be, necessitating more length to be trimmed from your hair.

12. Treat and Mend Your Split Ends
Now let's be honest, all the above preventative measures sound straightforward enough BUT let's also be realistic. Some of us, and I include myself in this category, are not prepared to fully give up our use of heat styling tools such as hair straighteners, curlers and hair dryers, which all increase our risk of developing hair damage and split ends. I've minimised my use of heat tools but haven't eliminated them completely.

Traditionally the only way to get rid of unsightly split ends used to be a trip to the salon for a trim as mentioned above. However with daily heat styling, split ends can form quickly making frequent enough hair trims impractical and costly. Luckily there is now another treatment option.

bhave Fresh Ends is a relatively new product with revolutionary Raw Natural Keratin Technology which has the ability to penetrate the hair shaft and rebuild hair damage from the inside out while slow releasing ceratonia peptides, keratin and certified organic argan oil smoothes, seals and controls misbehaving split ends.

This product improves the strength and elasticity of hair, and smoothes and continually repairs split ends damage without product build up. If you continue to regularly heat style your hair, even if you use a heat protectant like I do, I'd strongly recommend adding bhave Fresh Ends to your hair care routine. It's simple, effective and a little of this product goes a long way!

The aim of the Monday Makeup Madness link up party is to share some beauty blogger love, strengthen our beauty blogger community and help all our blogs be seen by new readers.

At last week's link up party we had 15 lovely bloggers link up a beauty related post each. The three most viewed posts, plus my pick of the posts, included the following:

Four Popular Linked Posts From The
Monday Makeup Madness 56 Link Up Party

  • There's nothing like having a little sticky beak into another beauty blogger's handbag contents to see what products they find essential to carry around. Laura's linked post from The Life of Laura proved to be a popular one last week. Keeping all her bobby pins in a small container is such a good idea making all that rummaging around the bottom of the bag which I do unnecessary!
  • Barbe's linked post from Fashionista in Suburbia of the soon to be released L'Oreal Colour Riche La Vie En Rose Exclusive Collection of nail polishes and lipsticks was popular. Those soft pinks look so lovely!
  • We were all curious about Mel's Laura Gellar Brighten 'n' Balance foundation that she recently won. Unfortunately it didn't quite live up to her expectations. Read why not on her linked post from Aussie Asian Beauty.
  • I loved Amy's long list of beauty hacks in her linked post from Health and Beauty Girl. This list of hacks is useful for those occasions when you run out of a specific product and need to know what you can use instead.
I'd love you to join this week's Monday Makeup Madness link up party and if your post is one of the three most clicked upon I'll feature it in next week's link up post. I'll also pick one other linked post to feature. The rules of the link up are simple:
  • Link up one makeup or beauty related post a week only.
  • Include a link back to Fabulous and Fun Life in your post.
  • Visit and comment on three or more linked posts. Remember the more you comment on other beauty bloggers' posts the more likely they will be to return the love by visiting and commenting on your blog.
  • This link up starts early each Monday morning (Sydney time) and will remain open until late Wednesday evening.

Conclusion
Overall this has been another brilliant value Marie Claire Parcel Ageless subscription box for an outlay of $25 as I have a seasonal subscription. The one-off subscription box price is $29.95. More info re the various subscribing options is available HERE. My calculated total value for this box is $116.17. Considering I will be using each and every one of these products I am extremely happy with it.

Although only one product is full sized, all the sample sizes are deluxe sized. I'm perfectly happy to receive higher end deluxe samples rather than lower end full sized products as it enables me try new products I might not have splashed out on myself without trying the products first.

If you are interested in looking at previous Marie Claire Parcel Ageless beauty box contents, I have reviewed a previous edit HERE.

Which of the above Marie Claire The Parcel Ageless products
appeals to you the most?
